How Do 29° ASME B1.5 Acme Threads Differ from 60° Unified V-Threads and Square Threads?

Power transmission lead screws, machine tool vise spindles, jackscrews, and aerospace linear actuators rely on the 29° trapezoidal Acme thread form standardized in ASME Geometric & Mechanical Standards (ASME B1.5) rather than 60° V-threads because the shallower 14.5° flank half-angle dramatically reduces radial bursting friction and maximizes axial thrust efficiency. Compared to legacy 0° square threads—which are notoriously difficult to single-point turn or thread-mill and cannot be compensated for wear—the 29° included angle allows split half-nuts on lathe aprons to engage and disengage smoothly while permitting multi-flute Acme taps and carbide whirling inserts to clear the flank walls without dragging.

Under ASME B1.5 and NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) Handbook H28, a General Purpose Acme thread has a basic tooth depth equal to exactly half the axial pitch (h = 0.50 × P = 1 / [2 × TPI]). However, to prevent radial wedging on the major and minor cylinders, the standard adds a radial root/crest clearance of c = 0.010" for coarse pitches (10 TPI and coarser) and c = 0.005" for fine pitches (12 TPI and finer). Consequently, the external screw thread is turned to a deeper minor diameter of D_1(ext) = D - P - 2c, causing the flat at the bottom root of the thread groove (and therefore the required nose flat on your lathe threading tool) to narrow to F_root = 0.3707 × P - (2c × tan 14.5°) = 0.3707 × P - (0.5173 × c).

When Should Engineers Specify ASME B1.8 Stub Acme or Centralizing Acme Threads?

When designing thin-walled hollow actuator tubes, oilfield drill-pipe couplings, or high-torque shafts where a full 0.50 × P tooth depth would weaken the core cross-section, mechanical engineers specify ASME B1.8 Stub Acme threads. A Stub Acme thread retains the exact same 29° included flank angle and pitch series as General Purpose Acme, but truncates the basic tooth height to h_stub = 0.30 × P. Because the tooth is shallower, the crest flat widens to F_crest = 0.4224 × P and the external root flat widens to F_root = 0.4224 × P - (0.5173 × c), yielding a 40% stiffer root core and faster multi-pass CNC lathe cycle times.

In General Purpose Acme assemblies (Classes 2G, 3G, and 4G, where the letter G denotes internal-to-external major diameter clearance), the screw and nut contact exclusively on the 29° angled flanks; if the screw is subjected to heavy side-loads, the major crest could touch the nut bore and jam. For long horizontal lead screws exposed to sagging cantilever loads, ASME B1.5 defines Centralizing Acme classes (2C, 3C, 4C), which hold a tight major-diameter slip fit between the screw crest and nut root so the crest cylinder physically supports radial shaft whip without jamming the flanks.

How Do You Inspect 29° Acme Pitch Diameter Over Three Measuring Wires?

Because an optical comparator or standard anvil micrometer cannot reach the pitch line of a deep 29° trapezoid, machinists verify Acme threads using the Three-Wire Method traceable to Machinery's Handbook (Industrial Press) and ISO International Metrology Standard metrology principles. To touch the 14.5° flanks exactly at the mid-slope pitch cylinder (zero angle-error sensitivity), select the Best Wire Size: W_best = (P / 2) × sec(14.5°) = 0.51645 × P. Place two wires in adjacent thread grooves on one side of the screw and the third wire opposite, then calculate the target micrometer reading M using the exact 29° cotangent-cosecant equation:

M = D_2 + W × (1 + csc 14.5°) - (P / 2) × cot(14.5°) = D_2 + 4.99393 × W - 1.93336 × P. When turning multi-start Acme lead screws where the lead angle λ = arctan(Lead / [π × D_2]) exceeds 3.5°, remember to tilt your lathe threading tool holder to match the helix angle so the 14.5° flanks are not undercut, and apply the bank-angle wire correction on our Three-Wire Thread Measurement Calculator.
