Lathe Knurling Blank Diameter & Pitch Calculator: Form vs. Cut Knurls (DIN 82)
Under DIN 82 and ANSI B94.6, cold-forming knurling wheels displace metal radially outward, increasing outside diameter by approximately 50% of the circular pitch (+0.50 × P). Turn the starting blank to D_blank = D_finished − 0.50 × P for form knurling, or D_blank = D_finished − 0.08 × P for chip-shearing cut knurling.

Compute pre-turned blank diameter (D_blank), circumferential tooth tracking integer (N_teeth = π·D / P), and exact zero-split tracking diameter.
Why Does Form Knurling Increase Outside Diameter While Cut Knurling Barely Changes OD?
Just like the distinction between chip-cutting taps and fluteless roll-form taps (see our Roll Form Tap Drill Chart), lathe knurling operates by two fundamentally different physical mechanisms codified in ISO International Metrology Standard / DIN 82 and Machinery's Handbook (Industrial Press). In Cold-Forming (Bump or Straddle) Knurling, hardened wheels are pressed radially into the rotating bar stock without shearing chips; plastic deformation flows metal out of the root valleys upward into the 90° tooth crests.
Because volume is conserved, the finished outer diameter grows above the turned blank diameter by ΔD ≈ 0.45·P to 0.55·P. If a blueprint specifies a 20.00 mm finished knurled OD with a 1.0 mm pitch RGE30° diamond pattern, turning the blank to 20.00 mm will produce an oversized 20.50 mm part that fails ring-gage inspection! You must pre-turn the blank to 19.50 mm as verified by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) dimensional gage tolerances.
In Cut Knurling, the knurling wheels are mounted at an acute compound angle so their sharp front edges shear micro-chips cleanly off the bar like a miniature gear hob. Because metal is excavated rather than displaced, radial tool pressure is reduced by 80% (preventing thin-wall tubing collapse and slender shaft deflection—compare our Deflection & L/D Calculator), and finished OD grows by only 0.05·P to 0.10·P due to minor crest burr swell.

How to Prevent Double-Tracking (Split Peaks) Using Circumferential Pitch Math
When a knurling wheel makes its first revolution around the workpiece, its teeth indent a series of valleys spaced by circular pitch P. If the blank circumference C = π × D_blank is not an approximate integer multiple of the effective pitch, the wheel teeth land on the flanks of the first-revolution indentations on the second revolution—splitting each tooth in half ("double tracking") and destroying the diamond points.
To guarantee crisp, immediate tooth tracking on the first revolution, calculate the theoretical tooth count N = round(π × D_blank / P) and adjust your pre-turned blank diameter within the drawing tolerance band to D_tracking = (N × P) / π. Combine this exact blank diameter with a firm initial plunge and Constant Surface Speed programming on our CNC Lathe G96 CSS Calculator and Spur Gear Module & Pitch Calculator.
