Dowel Pin Reamer Chart & Tolerance Calculator: Press Fit vs Slip Fit (ASME / ISO)

Standard hardened inch dowel pins per ASME B18.8.2 are ground +0.0002" over nominal diameter (+0.0001" to +0.0003"). Therefore, a standard nominal size reamer creates a transitions/light press fit, an under-size reamer (Nominal - 0.0005") produces a permanent Press Fit, and an over-size reamer (Nominal + 0.0005") produces a removable Slip Fit.

Why Are Standard ASME B18.8.2 Dowel Pins Ground +0.0002" Oversize?

A common trap for junior machinists and mechanical engineers is assuming that a 1/4" (0.2500") hardened alloy steel dowel pin measures 0.2500" on a micrometer. Under ASME Geometric & Mechanical Standards (ASME B18.8.2) and ANSI Engineering Standards Webstore, commercial inch dowel pins are manufactured in two distinct diameter series, neither of which is 0.2500":

Standard Series ASME B18.8.2 dowel pins (+0.0002" over nominal) are centerless ground to a tight 0.0002" (5 µm) total diameter tolerance band spanning from Nominal + 0.0001" minimum to Nominal + 0.0003" maximum (for example, a 1/4" pin measures 0.2501" to 0.2503" or 6.353–6.358 mm). Conversely, Oversize Series dowel pins (+0.0010" over nominal) are ground to Nominal + 0.0009" to +0.0011" and are stocked exclusively for re-reaming worn or bell-mouthed fixture holes during toolroom maintenance rebuilds without shifting hole centerlines.

How to Select Under-Size vs Over-Size Chucking Reamers for Press Fit and Slip Fit

In precision tool and die alignment—where two mating plates must be separated and reassembled repeatedly without losing positional repeatability—the golden rule of fixture design is to press-fit the dowel pin into the base plate and slip-fit the protruding half into the removable cover plate. Because ASME B18.8.2 pins are already +0.0002" oversize, toolmakers keep stocked sets of Dowel Pin Reamers ground specifically in Under-Size (-0.0005") and Over-Size (+0.0005") increments, as detailed in Machinery's Handbook (Industrial Press) and NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) gage tolerance standards:

For a permanent Press Fit in steel or cast iron housing plates, select a 0.0005" under-size chucking reamer to finish the hole to Nominal - 0.0005" to -0.0001" (0.2495"–0.2499" for a 1/4" dowel), which guarantees 0.0002" to 0.0008" of positive interference. For a removable Slip Fit in the mating cover plate, select a 0.0005" over-size dowel pin reamer to finish the hole to Nominal + 0.0004" to +0.0008" (0.2504"–0.2508" for a 1/4" dowel), yielding 0.0001" to 0.0007" of smooth hand-sliding locating clearance.

When reaming blind or through dowel pin holes on a CNC vertical machining center, always spot-drill with a rigid 140° carbide spot drill, drill 0.20 to 0.35 mm (0.008" to 0.014") undersize using a high-concentricity twist drill, and run a straight-flute or left-hand spiral cobalt chucking reamer in a radial floating holder at 50% of drilling surface speed with generous flood coolant to prevent built-up edge, chatter lobes, and bell-mouthing at the hole entry.

Before pressing hardened dowel pins into an assembly on an arbor press or hydraulic ram, wipe the ground pin exterior and reamed bore clean with lint-free solvent, brush a thin film of extreme-pressure molybdenum disulfide assembly paste onto the lead chamfer to prevent cold-welding galling in stainless steel or aluminum, and verify perpendicular alignment with a toolmaker square during the initial seating stroke.

Metric Dowel Pins (ISO 8734 m6 vs ISO 2338 h8) and H7/F7 Hole Pairing

Under ISO International Metrology Standard (ISO 8734 hardened parallel pins), standard metric dowel pins are ground to an oversize m6 shaft tolerance (for example, a Ø6 mm m6 dowel pin measures 6.004 to 6.012 mm). Consequently, reaming a standard metric H7 hole (6.000 to 6.012 mm) automatically creates a transition/light locating press fit! For a heavy permanent press fit with an m6 metric pin, bore or ream to K7 or N7; for an easy slip fit, ream to F7 or G7.
